The high street is awash with shimmering sliver dresses this season and bridal fashion isn’t far behind!
Catwalk designers from Moschino to McCartney have used silver metallics in their Autumn Winter shows and as this filters through to the high street it seems that the top trend this Christmas is sizzling silver.
At La Novia, we are always looking for something different and we keep one eye firmly on the catwalk to keep our creations beautifully bridal but in keeping with changes in fashion. This season is no different and La Novia has a beautiful collection of subtly silver wedding dresses to suit any shape.

What is the business book you recommend that everyone should read?
There is no book that can tell you what to do it is intuition and self belief, with a clear goal in your head. Allow yourself to make mistakes but learn from them.
What do you think are your business strengths and weaknesses?
Being foreign is a strength but also a weakness! The strength is bringing a continental feel to my designs and way of selling but the weakness is the language barrier even though I am fluent in English.
What was the defining moment on your career path that has got you where you are now?
Loosing my previous job about 15 years ago. This gave me the drive to start out on my own.
How do you spend your spare time?
Relaxing at the moment because we are so busy but I do love to spend my spare time being creative and making beautiful bridal jewellery.
Do you think you achieve a good work/life balance?
Not at the moment. Recently moving premises was stressful and we are still putting the final touches to the shop. I am slowly getting back to normal though.
What makes Edinburgh the best location for you to live and/or work?
The architecture and size. It is a beautiful city but also small enough to have easy access to get out into the countryside.
What is your special area of Edinburgh, or special place in Edinburgh and why?
Morningside. This is where I live and I love the greenery around that area.
What would you consider the pinnacle of your career?
Exhibiting in the London Wedding Exhibition and realising my designs are recognised nationwide. I want to eventually start mass producing my designs internationally.
Describe your typical day.
The first thing I do is go to my second shop, Dressmaking Studio 2 (which is where our dresses are actually made) in Comiston to see the girls there and talk them through the plan for the day; whether new designs need to be made up, veils to be made or alterations to be done.
Then I head to Queen Street and go through the diary for the days appointments. Once I get the daily paperwork out of the way I can help the girls with dress appointments and fittings. I still love to work in the shop and see my designs looking beautiful on our brides!
With global fashion weeks well under way it is time to start looking at the new wedding collections for 2012. Unlike mainstream fashion’s two collections a year, wedding dress designers only exhibit one exclusive collection per annum.
At La Novia we have been working hard to secure dresses from top international designers to bring Edinburgh some of the World’s most exclusive dresses. From the extravagant to the timeless and modest; La Novia has it covered.
In terms of wedding dress fashion, La Novia believes that the right dress is paramount regardless of what is ‘in’ this season. If A-line’s ‘in’ but a fishtail fits you like a glove – then go with your heart. That said we thought we would give you some pointers as to what is top on the wedding catwalk this 2012.
From high fashion to mainstream the effects of the showstopping series Mad Men have been felt. Having been reliably informed by fashion insiders; gone are the days when we can get away with looking scruffy – uber glam is back! Bridal fashion has not escaped this year-long trend and we have seen a lot of 1950s inspiration take to the wedding catwalks.
Hemlines are hitting just below the knee and the A-Line skirt is puffing out to give that quintessentially 50s silhouette. La Novia Couture’s ‘Flower Power’ and ‘Mojito’ are perfect examples of the 1950s effect wedding dress. As well as these beautiful dresses, La Novia can design and create a dress to your exact requirements; whether you want it in this seasons ‘it’ colour – Red or a wintery plum; Liliana Dabic will be able to effortlessly create you the perfect 50s dress.
If you want to go down the more traditional route but fancy a bit of 1950s flair why not accessorise with a slick of bright red lipstick or nail lacquer. Alternatively, go for super quaffed hair or let the bridesmaids do the talking in A-line skirts or super tight figure hugging calf length pencil skirts a la Joan Harris herself!
Pay us a visit on Queen Street for a bit more inspiration!
All our La Novia dresses are made in Edinburgh at our very own dressmaking studios. Our beautiful fabrics are sourced from around the world to make your wedding dress as luxurious as it should be.
But what to do with the gorgeous scraps of silk and lace we have to trim in order to fit you to perfection? Here at La Novia we have put our thinking caps on and have come up with some wonderful suggestions to put some of your excess wedding fabric to good use!
Use your little fabric off cuts to tie up the bouquets, whether there is only enough for you or for all your bridesmaids it will look even more gorgeous when the bouquet is dried!
Table decorations/seating plan
Why not adorn your seating plan or table decorations with some of your fancy lace? If it doesn’t fit into your colour scheme you could even get it dyed!
If you have any tulle from your veil left over why not make a gorgeous and sentimental present for the bridesmaids. Get the leftovers sewn into little bags and makeup lavender bags for there underwear drawers – a very ‘make do and mend’ approach to wedding gifts!
If you have got quite a bit of fabric left or just love your trim and want to buy some more why not give your wedding guests a sneaky peak. Tie or stick some lace or Tulle around your invitations to whet their appetite for the big day.
La Novia are experts when it comes to artistic flair so if you fancy something a wee bit different leave it to Liliana and she will come up with a fantastic head piece! The girls can incorporate parts of your dress to make sure you are dressed from head to toe in haute couture style!
For something a little more saucy our dressmaking studio can use the tiniest of fabric scraps to make you your very own bespoke garter. He may not notice it matches your wedding dress – but you will!
La Novia has successfully moved; transporting hundreds of wedding dresses and countless tiaras and veils safely across the centre of Edinburgh. Our Queen Street store is now open and so far it has been a huge hit with our clients. With a working fireplace for cosy winter fittings and bespoke chandeliers – La Novia could be the chicest store in Edinburgh.
Driving down Queen Street you may have noticed some super stylish window displays showing off some of our favourite wedding dresses! These gorgeous window creations are courtesy of our fabulous London based visual merchandiser. Join us this evening at 6pm for our grand opening, have a nose around the store and enjoy some bubbly whilst browsing our wonderful collections.
